Firework Safety & Cataract Awareness Month With Our Sacramento Optometristscataract exam in sacramento

For those of us who spend our lives committed to helping people make the most of their vision, June is a particularly important month. It is both Firework Safety and Cataract Awareness Month. As your Sacramento eye doctors, Arena Eye Care Inc. is here, not only to help your vision, but to protect it. That is why we are joining the observance of these two simultaneously observed months. While cataracts develop slowly and fireworks can cause injury quickly, they both can have serious implications to the health of your vision.

Our Optometrists Want You to Protect Your Eyes From Cataracts and Fireworks

The goals of both Firework Safety Month and Cataract Awareness Month are to protect your eyes from forces that you have the ability to at least slow, if not, totally prevent. While cataracts may not be 100% preventable, the ramifications of them can be minimized with early detection and an appropriate treatment plan. Cataracts are a clouding of the lens within the eye and are often associated with growing older. This means the older you get, the more frequently you should get a thorough eye exam. In most cases when cataracts are discovered early treatment is relatively simple. Waiting won’t cause permanent damage, but it can cause one to live with unnecessarily blurry vision. Not only that, but cataract surgery can also greatly decrease ones dependence on eyeglasses to see well. That is what Cataract Awareness Month is designed to prevent. Interestingly, June is also the time when our celebration of our independence puts vision of adults and children alike, at risk.

Sacramento Eye Doctors Warn of the Dangers of Fireworks

While burns are certainly a common injury associated with fireworks purchased for home use, eye injuries account for about 20% of fireworks injuries. These eye injuries don't just come from the big public displays but are common with sparklers, bottle rockets and firecrackers. Fireworks in the backyard can provide fun, laughter and help us celebrate, but they also can cause permanent eye injuries. We can't tell you not to have fun this Fourth of July. We can, however, caution you to protect your eyes. Of course, if you or a family member should experience an issue we encourage you to see us at Arena Eye Care Inc., your Sacramento optometrists.
