Importance of Annual Eye Exams

Annual eye exams are important to well-being, regardless of your age or physical health. Regular eye exams give our optometrist the opportunities to detect trouble even before you know you have a vision problem.

Many people wait until they have an eye problem before they see an optometrist. The downside to this approach is that many eye conditions and diseases do not cause symptoms until they reach an advanced stage, cause damage and become more difficult to treat. Our optometry specialists can often catch these problems early, while they are in a manageable state. Detecting problems early reduces the risk for vision loss.

Our Sacramento Optometrists Discuss Our Annual Vision Exam

During an annual vision exam, our Sacramento optometrists will do more than simply prescribe glasses or contact lenses – we look for common eye diseases, assess how well your eyes work as a team and evaluate your eyes as an indicator of your overall health.

An annual vision exam usually includes a visual acuity exam to determine if you have 20/20 vision, tests measuring your visual function and eye health such as depth perception and color vision, keratometry that measures the curvature of the clear outer corneal surface of the eye, and tests that measure how well your eyes focus.

A regular eye examination can also include tonometry to measure eye pressure; increased pressure inside the eye may indicate glaucoma, a disease that damages the optic nerve and may potentially lead to blindness.

Our eye doctors can detect other conditions during a routine vision exam, such as high blood pressure and diabetes. People with vision problems are more likely to have diabetes, poor hearing, heart problems, high blood pressure, lower back pain and strokes. They are also at increased risk for falls, injury and depression.
