Sports Vision by Our Optometrist in Sacramento

Here in sunny Sacramento, lots of people enjoy playing sports in their spare time. However, sports vision is an important topic that often gets neglected. Here at Arena Eye Care Optometry we can help you keep your eyes safe and choose effective vision correction for playing sports or doing anything else in life.

What are Some Considerations of Sports Vision?

There are three main considerations when talking about sports vision: eye safety, the type of vision correction device used and performance. Eye safety includes things like protecting your eyes from impact and making sure that your corrective lenses do not put you at additional risk. Wearing contact lenses in the pool, for example, puts you at additional risk of developing an eye infection.

The choice of lenses to wear while sporting also affects your ability to see as well as the likelihood of problems such as breaking glasses or losing a contact lens. Contact lenses are often preferable because they give you better peripheral vision; however, rigid gas permeable lenses may be prone to falling out of your eyes during certain activities. Conventional glasses lenses, and especially frames, may not be able to hold up to many activities.

Lastly, for some activities, cetain types of vitamins can help your brain process visual tasks more quickly. Sports like baseball and tennis are have the potential to be helped by this the most.

Proper Sports Eyewear

Several different options exist for meeting the various needs of vision correction in athletes and active people:
• Sports goggles come in prescription and non-prescription forms and help to protect your eyes. They are also built to be hard to damage.
• Rigid gas permeable (RGP) lenses may be the best choice for the crispest possible vision. However, they may be more prone to falling out than soft lenses.
• Soft contact lenses are a good choice in many cases, but you may need to wear non-prescription eye protection over them.
• Special glasses designed to have flexible frames and extremely break-resistant lenses can be purchased for sports activities.
• Prescription swim goggles can be purchased for use when playing aquatic sports or going swimming.

There is no one best choice for everyone. For example, not everyone is even able to wear contact lenses comfortably. Contact lenses, in general, are not recommended for activities where you may get water in your eyes. People who play sports outdoors will probably want sunglasses, either prescription or non-prescription over a pair of contacts.

Sports Vision and Eye Health

In order to protect your vision, make sure to use protective eyewear made for the sport that you are playing at all times. Check to make sure that your protective eyewear is in good condition so that it doesn't break while you are using it.
