Low Vision

Having low Vision means your vision is reduced despite having an accurate glasses prescription. It can be hard for you to do many of the things you used to do, or that need to get done during a typical day. Some Low Vision issues can be corrected, while others can only be monitored and managed. To discover the cause of your vision issues, you'll need an eye exam. If you're in the Sacramento, CA, area, Arena Eye Care Optometry is here to help.

The Main Causes of Low Vision

There are a lot of causes of Low Vision, but some of the most common causes are glaucoma, macular degeneration, cataracts and diabetes. These have varying degrees of severity, and some are more treatable than others. Additionally, low vision can simply come with age. However, getting older doesn't necessarily mean you'll be affected by vision issues. The most important thing to do if you notice your vision changing is work with your optometrist to find the cause, so it can be treated.

How Our Eye Doctor Can Help

The first thing to do if you're finding that your vision isn't as good as it used to be is have your eyes examined. That will give us a baseline for your current situation, which will help our optometrists discover any potential issues that could be affecting your eyes. If you have cataracts, for example, you may be able to have surgery to remove them, which would solve your low vision concerns. Other conditions, such as macular degeneration, may not be as easily treatable. Once the cause of reduced vision is determined, a course of action to deal with that is started.

The second thing to do is determine what can be done to maximize the vision you have. Dr. Krister L. Holmberg and Dr. Shaphali Patel are happy to help anyone with low vision. That includes people whose eyes are already treated by another doctor. You can continue with them for your medical eye care and only come to us for help with Low Vision.

How You Can See Better

Once we determine how well you are capable of seeing, and what you have difficulty with, we can help you develop skills to maximize your vision. Different tools can also be used to do that. Some of those tools included specialty magnifiers, telescopes and even virtual reality headsets (yes really!!!). Technology is changing and there are so many opportunities available that can have a positive impact on your life.
