Fruits & Veggies and How They Impact Vision: More Matters Month

Do you eat enough fruits and veggies for good eye health? Studies show that diet directly relates to vision and overall eye health as people age. Make sure that you are visiting your optometry practitioner at Arena Eye Care and Optometry in Sacramento at least once a year.

Fruits & Veggies and How They Impact Vision: More Matters Month

September is More Matters Month, dedicated to eating more fruits and vegetables; consequentially, it is also the time of year dedicated to fighting childhood obesity. Fruits & Veggies- More Matters Month tries to raise awareness about the importance of eating enough fresh produce, as well as fosters community initiatives related to healthful eating.

Vitamin A

You have probably heard that carrots help with vision; this is due to their high content of Vitamin A. Sweet potatoes and squash contain beta carotene, which converts to Vitamin A during metabolism. These veggies also help reduce the risk of contracting cataracts.

Lutein

If you look for eye supplements online, you will find many called Lutein. Avocados contain lutein, as well as Vitamins C and E, which contribute to healthy eyes. It is reported that these vitamins can help slow down the development of macular degeneration, one of the prevalent causes of blindness in the US. Eating dark, leafy greens will also help provide lutein and preserve vision; consume lettuces, spinach, broccoli, and turnip or collard greens for eye health.

Vitamin C

Vitamin C is essential for eye health and dark berries or peppers are full of it! Make sure to eat foods rich in Vitamin C daily, as the body is unable to store this nutrient; consider adding tomatoes, blueberries, and cranberries to your diet.
