Myopia Control From Arena Eye Care Optometry

Vision problems can impact anyone, even children. As much as that can feel like a sad, heavy burden, there are many treatments available to help children improve their vision and live normally. One common chronic issue that children face is degenerative myopia. Nearsightedness that starts early in life can progress and become worse over the years. That is where myopia control comes into play. It can help stop that progression and protect the health of a patient’s eyes. At Arena Eye Care Optometry, we offer comprehensive myopia control to the children of Sacramento, CA.

What Is Myopia Control

This is the umbrella term for the entire list of treatments that help with progressive nearsightedness, particularly in children. They come in a few categories, and treatments are geared around underlying causes of the vision issues. In general, these different treatments can be broken into three categories.

Eye Drops

Eye drop treatments can help reduce inflammation, manage pain, control fatigue and otherwise mitigate problems with our eyes and our vision. Atropine drops are an optional course of action to help stem the tide of nearsightedness. Atropine treatment has been shown to reduce the progression of myopia in children. Studies show the efficacy of atropine drops (specifically 0.05% atropine).

Soft Contact Lenses

Contact lenses are frequently used to help treat myopia. When it comes to myopia control, multifocal lenses are a cost-effective way to help with compound issues. They are so useful that they can slow the progression of the problem altogether. Naturally, eyeglasses can help as well. Multifocal eyeglasses are as common a treatment as contacts, and both have been clinically shown to slow the progression of myopia. Dr. Holmberg is certified to fit MiSight daily contact lenses. MiSight lenses are soft lenses that are FDA approved for Myopia Control and work really well.

Orthokeratology (Ortho-k)

These are special contacts for myopia control. They are gas permeable contacts that are only worn at night (while sleeping). They help to gently reshape the cornea (kind of like braces do for teeth). In many cases, that gentle, nightly reshaping is enough that children will not need additional correction throughout the day. Because of the way the cornea is reshaped, Ortho-k has been shown to dramatically reduce progression in many cases. Dr. Holmberg is certified to fit CRT and iSee lenses.
