What is Dry Eye?

Dry eye occurs when your eyes do not produce enough tears to keep them moist or when the quality of your tears is low. It is a common condition that affects millions of Americans each year. While some people are at a higher risk for dry eye, it can happen to anyone. Risk factors include age (50 or over), contact lens wear, certain autoimmune diseases, and deficiencies in Vitamin A or Omega 3.

Symptoms of Dry Eye

The most common symptoms of dry eye include a burning or stinging sensation in the eyes, a gritty feeling, or the sensation of having something in the eye. Other symptoms may include blurry vision, sensitivity to light, redness, and eye strain.

Dry Eye Treatment

Treatment options for dry eye range from over-the-counter eye drops to surgical procedures and everything in between. The best treatment for you will depend on the severity of your dry eye and its underlying cause.

Over-the-Counter Eye Drops

For occasional dry eye, over-the-counter eye drops can provide effective relief. These drops act as artificial tears and provide lubrication. However, many over-the-counter eye drops target specific types of dry eye, so it is best to know what the causes and contributes to your dry eyes so the right type of over-the-counter eye drop is used. Having your eyes evaluated by a qualified optometrist will help determine the cause of your dry eyes and the best approach to dealing with it. If you have severe or chronic dry eye, it is even more important to consult with your optometrist.

Prescription Eye Drops

Your optometrist may prescribe specific medicated eye drops or even a nasal spray to treat your dry eye. Common prescription medications aim to reduce inflammation and/or enhance your body's natural tear production. In some cases, short-term use of steroid eye drops may also be recommended.

Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) Treatment

At Arena Eye Care Optometry, we also offer IPL treatment for dry eyes caused by eyelid inflammation. Also known as PhotoFacial, IPL, or intense pulsed light, works by warming the eyelids and adjacent skin and thereby decreasing inflammation, promoting proper oil production and improved cellular function. It also decreases wrinkles, prominent blood vessels and sun spots.

Contact Lens Modifications

If you currently wear contact lenses, adjustments may be necessary to alleviate dry eye symptoms. There has been a lot of development in contact lens materials over the last decade so modern contact lenses perform better on people with dry eyes than older lenses. Soft daily disposable contact lenses are often recommended for individuals with dry eye because they allow oxygen to pass through while retaining moisture. Rewetting drops can be used to moisten the lenses while they are worn, providing the necessary moisture for your eyes. Scleral contact lenses, which have a dome shape and do not touch the cornea but rest on the white part of the eye, can be beneficial in more severe cases..
