What Is Hyperopia?

This is a vision condition that is also called farsightedness. As the name indicates, it means that you can see far away objects more easily than objects that are up close. Hyperopia is caused by a refractive error that causes nearby things to look blurry. It also requires you to put a lot of effort into trying to make something clear. With this condition, the eyes tend to be too short which causes the light to focus in the wrong place. When this happens, the message that the retina sends to the brain via the optic nerve is blurry.

If you have farsightedness, that means that you were likely born with it. However, it often takes many years for it to cause you any vision problems. It runs in families, so you are more likely to get it if you have a family history of it. When kids have it, they are often more likely to have other vision problems like lazy eyes or crossed eyes. Children commonly are not

Symptoms of Hyperopia

The most common symptom of hyperopia is when you have a hard time seeing close objects.

If someone has a lot of hyperopia, they might even have a hard time seeing far away, but seeing things up close is always more difficult than seeing things far away when someone has hyperopia.  You may also experience eye strain and headaches. You may have a hard time doing activities like stitching or crafting. You may also find that you are squinting a lot as you are struggling to see up close.

If the amount of hyperopia you have is mild, you may not have noticeable symptoms. If a child has a mild to moderate amount hyperopia, they won't know it because whatever they experience is all they've ever known. In addition to that, children with hyperopia typically don't have symptoms at home, but it can have an impact on how well they learn at school.  This is why you and your family need to have annual eye exams to ensure that you can see as well as possible.
