Corneal Refractive Therapy at Our Sacramento CA Clinic

Modern eye care techniques offer a world of cutting-edge technologies to help people with farsightedness, nearsightedness, low vision and other disorders enhance their eyesight. LASIK laser surgery is one such technique, permitting recipients to enjoy corrected vision without resorting to glasses or contacts, and our clinic can provide any necessary pre-operative and post-operative care if you're a good candidate for this procedure. At the same time, we recognize that you may not be willing to spend thousands of dollars subjecting your eyes to permanent alteration. That's why we're so happy to offer corneal refractive therapy, or CRT, as an alternative to LASIK here at Arena Eye Care Optometry in Sacramento CA.

What Is Corneal Refractive Therapy?

Corneal refractive therapy, also known as orthokeratology or "ortho-k" is a means of reshaping the corneas of the eyes temporarily, during sleep. It involves the creation of customized contact lenses that act as molds when you wear them overnight. These devices gently change the shape of your corneas according to your individual corrective vision prescription. They tend to be most effective in cases of nearsightedness, but they can also treat mild to moderate farsightedness effectively. When you awake in the morning, you can remove the contacts and see the world clearly with no need for daytime contact lenses or eyeglasses.

The CRT Advantage

The effects of CRT may last anywhere from one day to several days, depending on the individual patient. But this temporary effect may actually be seen as an advantage over the permanent changes conveyed by LASIK surgery. For one thing, if your vision continues to change after receiving LASIK surgery (as in so many individuals who develop presbyopia later in life) you may be right back to using contacts or reading glasses. By contrast, your CRT lens prescription can always be updated to keep giving you clear daytime vision. (Some patients can actually correct their presbyopia through CRT) You can also keep CRT's vision correction going simply by re-inserting the overnight lenses on an as-needed basis. You even have the option of giving up on CRT and switching back to daytime lenses whenever you like. The fact that CRT's corneal correction is totally reversible gives you more options than any form of refractive surgery can offer.

CRT's benefits extend beyond vision correction in adults. Studies have indicated that corneal refractive therapy can slow the progression of nearsightedness in school-age children. While you're enjoying the benefits of CRT as a less expensive, more practical alternative to LASIK, your children could be using ortho-k lenses of their own to help prevent a severe refractive error. This is especially important when you consider that severe myopia has been associated with retinal detachment and other conditions that can cause permanent low vision.
