Chronic Allergies

Chronic Allergies

Allergies can cause a wide variety of reactions that affect the body in different ways. Plus, the number of allergens that can affect a person can be numerous, ranging from laundry powder to pollen. Our optometrists, Dr. Krister L. Holmberg and Dr. Shephali Patel, at Arena Eye Care Optometry are well aware of the impact that allergies can have on vision and overall eye health and wellness. From itchy eyes to dry eyes, allergies can have a substantial impact on a person's vision and eye comfort.

What Are Eye Allergies?

When something you're allergic to affects your eyes, there are a number of different symptoms you may notice. You may notice your eyes tearing or feeling itchy and dry. The eyelids or eyes themselves may become swollen. For some, the symptoms may be more extreme. Some allergies may affect the clarity of your vision and much more. Common allergens include mold spores, pet dander, dust mites, and more. It's also possible for people to be allergic to things inside of their homes as well as outside of their homes.

Eye Allergy Treatment

Your eye doctor may be able to prescribe eye drops and other types of remedies to help manage your allergies. However, before an eye doctor prescribes any medication, they will thoroughly assess the situation to determine the root causes of your eye irritation and verify that you're suffering from allergies. However, the redness, swollen eyes, pain, and discomfort you're experiencing are clear evidence that something is wrong. Many of these symptoms stem largely from allergens. Our optometrists may incorporate artificial tears, steroid eye drops, decongestants, and antihistamines to combat your allergies. Eye drops for children can be prescribed as well.

Sometimes, home remedies are appropriate when it comes to eliminating allergies. This doesn't always work. Sometimes professional help is needed to manage, reduce, or eliminate your allergies. Your eye doctor has an arsenal of different solutions that can be used to help manage allergies.

Once your doctor determines what allergens are affecting you, a plan or solution will be put in place.
