Common Eye Injuries

Eye injuries can happen at any time. While some, such as eye irritations from shampoo, are relatively trivial, some can be serious, resulting in loss of vision. At Arena Eye Care in Sacramento, we can diagnose and treat your eye injury.

Scratched Eye

A poke in the eye or rubbing the eye with an abrasive material can cause corneal abrasions or scratched eyes. These abrasions can be painful and make the eye more sensitive to light. They can also make the eye more sensitive to infections, which can cause more severe problems if left untreated.

Foreign Objects

This type of injury occurs when a foreign object penetrates the eye. For example, if your glasses break, and a piece of the lens gets into your eye. If a foreign object is in your eye, you could cause more damage by trying to remove it yourself. If possible, loosely tape a paper cup over the eye and contact our doctor of optometry or the emergency room.

Chemical Burn

Acid or alkali substances such as oven cleaner or toilet bowl cleaner can get into the eyes and burn them. Symptoms of chemical burn are eye pain, redness, swelling, blurred vision, and difficulty keeping the eye open. If these chemicals splash into your eye, flush your eye by putting your head under a stream of lukewarm water for 15 minutes. Then give us a call. Be sure to tell us what substance splashed into your eye.

Hit in the Eye

When you're hit in the eye, whether by a baseball, fist, or another object, you'll treat the injury immediately with an ice pack to reduce swelling. While you may only end up with a black eye, phoning us is still wise, so we can be sure no internal damage has been done to your eye.
