Dry Eye

The vast majority of us have experienced dry eyes at one point in time. In fact, almost 5 million people aged fifty or over suffer from dry eyes. But, what exactly causes your eyes to be dry and uncomfortable? This is the most common question asked of Dr. Krister L. Holmberg and Dr. Shephali Patel at Arena Eye Care Optometry of Sacramento. The truth is, it can be any number of things. Read on to find out the five most common causes of this unnerving condition.

1) Blocked Glands

Meibomian Gland Dysfunction (MGD) is the leading cause of dry eye, particularly in patients over the age of forty. These are minuscule glands located in the eyelids. They produce a mixture of oils that comprise the top layer of tear film, an essential element of the eye’s comfort.

2) Medical Conditions

There are a number of medical conditions and medications that can cause your eyes to be dry. If you have one of the following, let Drs Holmberg and Patel know, as this will help them determine the root cause.

  • Rheumatoid Arthritis, Diabetes, Sjogren’s syndrome, high blood pressure, lupus, and thyroid disease
  • Antihistamines, diuretics, beta-blockers, and anxiety medications
  • Refractive surgery (e.g. LASIK surgery)
  • Ectropion (out-turning of the eyelid) and lagophthalmos (sagging of the eyelid)
  • Long-term contact lens usage

3) Work in Front of Digital Screen for Long Periods of Time

Long periods of time in front of a digital screens reduce your eyes’ blink rate, which impacts the long-term functionality of your Meibomian glands and overall tear coverage over the front of your eyes.

4) External Factors

Smoke, dry or windy climates, indoor air circulation, and the aging process are all contributing factors in your eyes’ tear production.

5) Tear Production

Some patient’s eyes simply no longer produce enough tears, while others experience excessive tear evaporation.
