Eye Allergy FAQs

Eye Allergy

Swollen, itchy, and red eyes are common allergy symptoms which contribute to eye allergies being among the most common reasons why people see eye doctors. If you want eye allergy relief or other help from an optometrist near you in Sacramento, CA, contact Arena Eye Care Optometry for assistance.

What causes eye allergies?

Allergies result from our immune systems overreacting to harmless foreign bodies, aptly referred to as allergens. The symptoms of eye allergies occur when the membranes that protect our eyes, the conjunctiva, release histamines. These histamines make our eyes itch, water, and become swollen and red. This condition is known as conjunctivitis.

What times of the year are eye allergies most common?

Some allergens, like pollen, are seasonal and affect us during specific times of the year, such as spring. Allergies to molds that occur outside can also be seasonal. Many allergens are perennial, meaning they can affect us all year because we live with them all year. Common perennial allergens are animal dander, dust mites, and household mold.

How are eye allergies diagnosed?

We can offer an eye exam near you that checks the blood vessels in your corneas during a slit-lamp eye exam or with a white blood cell test. The exam or tests can confirm an allergic reaction, but do not identify which allergen caused your immune system to overreact. Identifying the specific cause may require additional tests, though the source of seasonal allergies may be apparent without testing.

How can I prevent eye allergy symptoms?

Prevention is the best medicine for many allergies, requiring avoiding or reducing exposure to allergens. Staying inside, keeping your windows rolled up while driving, and using your air conditioning can help limit your exposure to pollen.

Using hypoallergenic bedding and frequent washing helps reduce dust mites and animal dander exposure. Likewise, certified air filters for your vacuum and furnace, and mopping floors rather than sweeping can reduce some home allergens. Also, a dehumidifier can help reduce mold allergies.

How are eye allergies treated?

Over-the-counter medications, such as eye drops, antihistamines, and decongestants, can all help with eye allergy symptoms. Our eye doctor near you can prescribe steroidal eye drops and nasal sprays to further reduce your symptoms.
