If you live in Sacramento and are concerned about eye health issues that come with aging, you should consider what Arena Eye Care Optometry has to offer. However, there are also things that you can do to take care of your eyes.

Tips to Preserve Eye Health During the Aging Process

There are a few things that you can do to maintain your eye health as you get older. The following are some of them:

  • Get eye exams regularly – Starting at about 40, you should get an eye exam every year. Your optometrist should be looking for signs of ocular pathology including retinal damage and glaucoma. If you have a medical condition that increases the risk of an eye disorder, you should start doing this before age 40.
  • Wear sunglasses and/or a hat – The UV rays from the sun can cause damage to aging eyes.
  • Eat fruits and vegetables (especially green leafy veggies). A diet rich in fruits and vegetables will likely give you an intake of zeaxanthin and lutein, antioxidants that will reduce the risk of eye conditions. You can also take a multivitamin.
  • Quit smoking – Smoking decreases blood flow to the eyes and exposes them to toxic substances, such as nicotine and tar. This will increase the risk of developing macular degeneration and diabetic retinopathy.
  • Work in a well-lit space and take breaks – Working in a dimly lit area can strain your eyes, leading to fatigue and headaches. Also, if you are looking at screens, it is good to take breaks frequently. Look away from the computer every 10 minutes (or the TV every 30 minutes) for 10 seconds or so.
  • Sleep well – Being too tired can strain your eyes.
  • Heed warning signs – Typically, if you have eye problems, you'll have the best outlook if they're treated early. These include double vision and blurred vision, cloudy vision, eye pain, and more light sensitivity than usual.
