Top 5 Causes of Dry Eye

When you have dry eye syndrome, there are different types of treatment available. When you have your next eye exam with one of our optometrists, tell us about any symptoms that you are experiencing. Our eye doctors at Arena Eye Care Optometry in Sacramento would like to look at some of the common causes of dry eyes.

Getting Older

When you get older, your body will start to produce less of the essential tear film that is made to protect your eyes. Without enough tear film, you will have dry eyes that aren't lubricated enough to stay comfortable. Using artificial tears in the form of eye drops can often help with this problem.

Medical Conditions

Many medical conditions are associated with dry eyes. Diabetes is one such condition. Diabetes is now more common than ever and it can lead to several vision problems, dry eye being one of them. Talk to your doctor and your optometrist about what you can do to treat your condition.

Medications

Many of the medications on the market can cause your eyes to be dry. There are so many that it's a good idea to look through your medications to see if one of the side effects is dry eyes. If severe enough, you may be able to work with your doctor to switch to another medication. Oftentimes your eye doctor will be able to help manage the dryness so that you don’t’ have the change it.

Winter Air

The air during the winter is drier and it can cause the tear film on the front of your eyes to dry out at a faster rate. This is particularly common when heaters are used. It's helpful to get a dry eye treatment from an eye doctor to help comfort your eyes in the winter. Dry winter air dries out moisture more quickly. Eye drops can add moisture back and you may need to use a humidifier at home.

Too Much Air-Conditioning

An over-air-conditioned room will also dry out your eyes. It's best to try to set the air at a different temperature and add a humidifier if possible.
